CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Caleb Chapman’s Soundhouse is hosting the free On the Record vinyl celebration today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring vinyl displays, live DJ sets and a 3 p.m. interview with Steve Smith; a ticketed rock concert with Steve Smith and Vicious Beat will follow tomorrow night. FOX 13
- ➤ The Lake is a documentary about the Great Salt Lake's decline and environmental challenges; it premiered at Sundance and features insights from local scientists and figures like Leonardo DiCaprio. Online screenings run from Jan. 29 through Feb. 1 (tickets required). FOX 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On April 3, the Utah State Board of Education finalized two proposals for cutting millions in K–12 programs after a 5% spending mandate; one plan recommends targeted $39 million cuts while the other makes broader reductions in mental health, literacy & special education programs, with the Legislature to decide. The Salt Lake Tribune
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initiated a status review for Wilson’s phalarope amid concerns over the Great Salt Lake’s decline. Officials seek further scientific and commercial data (to decide if an endangered species designation is needed) before moving forward. FOX 13
- ➤ Officials warn that a lack of snow is hurting ski resorts and could cut water supplies (95 percent from snowpack) as drought worsens. More rain or snow is needed soon to fill reservoirs that already are below ideal capacity. FOX 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rep. David Shallenberger introduced a bill aimed at streamlining water applications to help the Great Salt Lake — environmentalists warn it might lower air and water quality, and discussions on adjusting the proposal will continue. FOX 13
