  • La Brioche Argentine Bakery (a beloved fixture for 12 years) closed on Sunday, Feb. 1 due to rising costs and lower foot traffic in Orem; the owner's family is exploring plans for a food truck or cafe.  FOX 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tech workers in Silicon Slopes have faced lengthy job searches amid AI-driven hiring changes and economic pressures, forcing many to adjust career plans and finances. Local employers and the University of Utah are refocusing hiring practices + updating curriculum to better prepare talent for new industry demands.  The Salt Lake Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Water managers reported that Utah’s winter snowpack is about one-third of normal, with 31 SNOTEL sites showing record lows and raising concerns for water supplies later this year. They noted that extra soil moisture from fall rains may help rivers + reservoirs fill more efficiently when the snow melts.  The Salt Lake Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governors from the upper basin states met in Washington, D.C. to discuss long-standing water rights issues; Utah Governor Spencer Cox said all are committed to avoiding litigation while Colorado Governor Jared Polis called the meeting productive (federal agencies may take control if no deal is reached).  Mid Utah Radio
  • Today, the LDS Church announced in Italy it will support the 2034 Olympics with a significant financial donation + use of its property, including Block 85 for a Medals Plaza and event spaces, and will encourage volunteer work, continuing its support from the 2002 Games.  The Salt Lake Tribune

SPORTS NEWS

  • Utah 2034 organizers plan to host the Winter Games by upgrading snowmaking systems and using stored snow to counter warm winters—steps that may include shifting Olympic and Paralympic dates—to secure safe competition in local mountain venues.  The Salt Lake Tribune
