- ➤ The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced its support for the 2034 Winter Olympics with a significant donation and land for Olympic use during a media event in Italy on Tuesday — echoing its 2002 contribution — as Utah prepares for Games starting Feb. 10. KUTV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers propose House Bill 197 to change how digital content in schools is vetted (using AI and stricter academic standards) as the bill heads to the House Education Committee next week. The changes follow a 2025 state audit recommending proactive reviews of school materials. FOX 13
- ➤ Sen. Brady Brammer proposed a resolution for UVU to study a night and weekend law school for second-career attorneys—intended to ease the shortage of legal professionals. The Senate Education Committee passed the proposal on Jan. 29, and the study costing $55,000 is due by the end of November if approved. The Salt Lake Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rep. David Shallenberger introduced a bill on Wednesday to name SR-92 through American Fork Canyon as Robert Redford Highway from Ashton Boulevard in Lehi east to Route 189 in Provo Canyon. The Utah Department of Transportation plans to update highway maps and signs as soon as practicable. KUTV
- ➤ Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran is advancing plans for an ice rink in the area using between $11 and $12 million from dedicated recreational funds to build a $16 million facility that may be located in Lehi (supported by local residents) and add a boost to tourism and recreation. KUTV

- ➤ Researchers report pediatric care is declining nationwide due to cuts in equipment and staffing, which is affecting local hospitals. In southern Utah, one family's experience at St. George Regional Hospital led to multiple transfers, and Intermountain Health warns rising RSV, flu and measles cases may force referrals elsewhere.
