COMMUNITY NEWS

FINANCE NEWS

  • Five years after the 2020 Magna earthquake, Utahns have increasingly purchased earthquake insurance with premiums rising from $24 million to $138 million as insurers paid out claims—experts advise homeowners to speak with their agents for full coverage while renters are usually covered by standard policies.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Under Utah law, judges must add treble damages to unpaid rent when a landlord proves the debt, which forces tenants to pay three times the daily rent or extra fees if they stay after their eviction notice ends. Lawmakers in committee voted against a bill that would have given judges more choice on these charges, leaving the rule as it is.  The Salt Lake Tribune
  • The Orem Planning Commission is reviewing a new zoning proposal today from Keystone Construction to build 53 single-family lots on 14 acres of Wilkerson Farm land as the landowner plans to sell. Local residents James Brown and John Porter expressed concerns over traffic, safety, and the loss of open space—hoping the commission will recommend a denial once again.  KUTV
  • Utah residents question if current DUI laws work as nearly 12,000 arrests occur each year, mostly involving first-time offenders who are young men. State Representative Steve Eliason said lawmakers will roll out reforms—one law will make drunk drivers who injure a parent pay child support and go into effect Jan. 1, 2026—and more measures may hold bars responsible for overserving.  KUTV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Utah man named Chris Larsen said hyperbaric treatment in Florida has eased long-COVID symptoms that left him homebound and kept him from work. He hopes the clinic will expand to Utah soon—offering others a chance for recovery.  FOX 13
