Good morning, Orem. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 26th of March.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Nearly all flavored vapes became illegal Tuesday after a judge allowed the ban to take effect—vape shop owners say the decision forces them to stop selling most flavors and may force many shops to close. Owners are checking with their lawyers and waiting for clear guidance from state officials who plan to enforce the law with undercover operations and ex parte warrants.  The Salt Lake Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • A Utah nurse from Highland is accused of urging her roommate to take insulin that killed her for a $1.5 million life insurance payout, had her license limited at her first court appearance on Monday, and now faces charges including aggravated murder that could bring the death penalty — text messages show she repeatedly pushed for dangerous doses.  KUTV
  • Officers responded to an Amber Alert after spotting a white Ford F-150 about 80 miles south of the house fire and took suspect Ricardo Rojel Trujillo into custody 16 minutes later on Monday at 7:30 p.m.—the two children he was seen with were unharmed and are now with the Division of Child and Family Services.  KUTV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Cox signed a bill that will change Utah college courses to focus on Western civilization, the rise of Christianity, and founding texts at Utah State with a pilot program starting May 7. Faculty oppose the plan—saying it limits academic freedom and new ideas as the curriculum expands statewide by 2029.  The Salt Lake Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday by Utah and Oklahoma as they challenged a 10th Circuit decision to move an air quality case to the D.C. Circuit—claiming that each state’s unique air quality should be reviewed locally. Utah Attorney General Derek Brown said the state’s mountains and air patterns demand local oversight while justices questioned if pollution’s effects stay regional—with a ruling expected this fall.  FOX 13
  • Governor Spencer Cox vetoed SB37 on Monday — stating that redirecting about $842 million in property tax revenue from schools to the general fund would harm public trust and create accounting and legal challenges. Lawmakers and education groups had urged the governor to act, and they may consider a veto override as discussions continue.  Daily Herald
  • A Utah man, Juan Jose Ramos—who had no criminal record and was legally in the country awaiting an asylum hearing—was deported to El Salvador on March 14 after being detained during a traffic stop where his tattoo was mistaken for a protest affiliation marker. His family learned of his location when a social media video posted by the Salvadoran president revealed his arrival among deportees.  FOX 13
  • Gov. Spencer Cox vetoed a bill Tuesday that would have let him appoint the chief justice of the state’s highest court—he said he did not want extra power and vetoed two other judicial bills while signing over 200 bills including ones for firefighter cancer screening and free school lunches, leaving the court system unchanged this session.  The Salt Lake Tribune
