CRIME NEWS

  • A Highland nurse is charged with aggravated murder and obstruction after giving lethal doses of insulin to a friend who died last August, with text messages revealing dismal finances and a possible marriage with young children—raising concerns among the victim’s family, Mayor Kurt Ostler said.  KJZZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Utah County commissioners on March 12 adopted new boundary maps and board seats to split Alpine School District into three parts, with Orem set to have four of the seven seats in the South District. The filing period for board members will open around the first week of June, with elections in November and the new districts starting the 2027-28 school year.  Daily Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Utah signed a law that lets parents remove digital content featuring their children and requires online creators earning over $150,000 to set aside 15% of their earnings in a trust fund for minors—steps taken after the child abuse conviction of YouTube personality Ruby Franke. The law aims to protect children from exploitation in online content.  Daily Herald
  • State officials told Utahns to safeguard their genetic data after 23andMe filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday—residents can delete their data and destroy test samples by following the steps in the consumer alert.  FOX 13
  • Governor Spencer Cox signed 100 bills on Wednesday, raising his total to 476 signed bills; he has one day left to review the remaining 105 bills before they automatically become law—if he takes no action, those bills will go into effect without his signature.  ABC4
  • State leaders and researchers are studying how to handle the high energy use of AI data centers that are growing in our region—while the One-U Responsible AI Initiative tests smarter algorithms and efficient computing centers and a new bill directs centers over 100 megawatts to sign independent grid contracts to protect consumer rates.  FOX 13
