- ➤ Representatives of nine charities from University Place mall's 2024 Giving Machines event were honored at the Orem City Council meeting on March 25 and received plaques for donated items. More than 70,000 visitors in Orem donated 45,845 items during the 2024 holiday season as part of the Light the World campaign—supporting both local and global efforts. Daily Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources held an online auction on March 26th where seized animal trophies — including antlers, pelts and skulls — were sold for $130,000 to support wildlife conservation. Law enforcement officials said the sale follows a report that over 1,000 wildlife were killed illegally last year and more than 6,400 poaching violations were recorded in 2024. The Salt Lake Tribune

- ➤ Today, a new Utah law makes it a felony for adults to engage in sexual acts with minors in virtual reality spaces, closing a legal gap that made such prosecutions difficult. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said the law aims to protect children as VR grows (experts recommend parents use parental controls to monitor usage). FOX 13
- ➤ On Friday, the Protect Utah Workers coalition of 14 labor unions announced it had collected about 130,000 signatures for a petition to overturn a law that ended collective bargaining for public employees, and the group must gather nearly double that number before the April 15 deadline—officials said errors in submitted forms could reduce the final count. The referendum is planned for the November ballot, where voters will decide on the law. Daily Herald
- ➤ Utah lawmakers signed Ashley’s Law—House Bill 127—last week, which sets a minimum sentence of 10 years to life for anyone convicted of raping someone who cannot protect themselves after Ashley was raped by her stepfather. Paula Vigil said the law is a long-fought step that she hopes will protect others from similar harm. FOX 13

- ➤ Intermountain Health finished a six-year study on a new twenty-five dollar bluetooth device called RAD 97—designed to monitor oxygen levels and help prevent opioid-induced respiratory depression that is linked to about 80,000 deaths each year. The device is not yet available but will be released nationally and internationally as further testing continues. ABC4

- ➤ USA Water Polo held its first Girls Olympic Development Program National Championship in Utah Sunday with 18 teams from 13 regions competing. Coach Mitchell Walker led the Mountain Zone team and said one or two athletes from each team will be chosen for a future camp that gives them a chance to represent Team USA globally + the tournament focused on developing young players.
