  • La Brioche Bakery in Orem has been a community staple for over 20 years but is struggling after the pandemic hurt its sales and a new, costly bathroom requirement challenged its finances. Owner Leticia Silva and her family are seeking help to keep the bakery running — its closure would end a cherished local legacy.  FOX 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Anika Celeste Thorpe, the co-defendant in Linda Nemelka’s 2020 murder case, was sentenced today in Third District Court to concurrent sentences for manslaughter and robbery that will run consecutively to her prior convictions—she accepted a plea deal from the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.  KUTV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The UVU Ballroom Dance Company Tour Team won first place at the World Culture Dance Competition on April 5th — they earned the award with a Latin medley set to 80s hits and months of dedicated rehearsals. The team will perform at a concert on April 18th and 19th and will travel to Blackpool in May to compete internationally.  ABC4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Driving instructor Mark Pierce—who has taught for over 30 years—said the Utah driver’s test still poses tricky questions that can confuse drivers. He advised students to focus on five basic maneuvers including backup, three-point turn, U-turn, uphill park and parallel park to stay safe.  FOX 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After meeting with state leaders, the EPA announced a change to air pollution rules that removes outdated guidance on foreign emissions—an update aimed at easing burdens on states like Utah and addressing pollution challenges on the Wasatch Front.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, April 7th, transportation secretary Sean Duffy rode a FrontRunner train from Salt Lake Central Station where local leaders explained that extra transit funding is needed to support Utah’s growth and prepare for the 2034 Winter Olympics—projects that are safe and on budget. Local officials said they will work with federal partners to make these improvements happen.  Daily Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Representatives from Huntsman Cancer Institute and local leaders broke ground for a new cancer center in Vineyard on April 8th that will cover 272,000 square feet at a price tag of $400 million and include a $75 million state allocation. The facility, scheduled to open in 2028, will help ease travel for cancer patients and boost research with the University of Utah, UVU and BYU.  Daily Herald
