- ➤ Today the American Lung Association released its 26th State of the Air report showing Salt Lake City ranks among the worst U.S. cities for ozone pollution, with Utah ranking 9th due to rising vehicle emissions and warm, stagnant air conditions. Utah Division of Air Quality Director Bryce Bird said ozone damages lung tissue and triggers asthma attacks—advising residents to exercise in the mornings or evenings when pollution levels are lower. - ➤ Judge Judith Billings, one of the first women on Utah’s inaugural appeals court, died at 82 earlier this month and was admired for her support of women in law. She served on the court, taught at the University of Utah, and led national judge groups — work that opened doors for many aspiring lawyers — inspiring future legal professionals. - ➤ Governor Spencer Cox declared a State of Emergency on Thursday for 17 counties after the Drought Response Committee warned of severe drought that left 42 percent of Utah under water scarcity, with some areas reporting much lower snowpack than usual—county officials may use the 30-day declaration to implement conservation measures.
