ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Teacher Robyn Bertzing recalled 17-year-old Noah Scribner, who was killed in a motorcycle crash days before graduation, as Orem mourns his loss and sets up grief counselors and a memorial fundraiser — a sign of the community's care.  KUTV

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 5, a man was fatally shot by the Utah County Major Crimes task force during a search warrant at a home on 800 East 400 North when he failed to comply with officers' orders—police have yet to name him as investigations continue.  The Salt Lake Tribune
  • A 23-year-old woman was arrested in northern Utah after she led multiple agencies on a high-speed chase from Idaho that saw her driving at dangerous speeds—she was charged with failing to stop, reckless driving and marijuana possession after nearly sideswiping other vehicles.  KUTV
  • Caleb Aidan Rees is charged with manslaughter for the October death of Rena Nguyen as prosecutors allege his actions and threats, including moving a loaded handgun in her line of sight (recordings of their arguments were used in court), drove her to suicide and the case in Provo will resume on Thursday when defense questions police evidence.  FOX 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • BYU students helped the school rank 86th on the National Academy of Inventor's top 100 list by serving as co-founders on 10 of 18 patents issued in 2024, which shows far more student involvement than the typical 4% seen among STEM Ph.D. holders. Many of the patents developed in STEM fields include medical devices & other innovations, highlighting a hands-on research approach.  Daily Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Federal funding restored 58 acres of the Provo River Delta near Provo Airport using ($50 million) to rebuild wetlands for the endangered June sucker and to support local bird habitat. Officials said the project changed bird patterns that led to more wildlife strikes (29 strikes last year) and helped create a new recreation area for visitors.  The Salt Lake Tribune
  • Utah’s two busiest airports near local wetlands use custom traps and noise devices to keep large migrating birds from striking airplane engines—officials say these measures help reduce costly wildlife strikes.  The Salt Lake Tribune
