COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Neighbors and supporters of Wilkerson Farm are pushing for a referendum after a city council rezoned the farm space, which has provided food security and family fun for 15 years—raising concerns about its future as a residential subdivision—while the petition needs 7,500 verified signatures in 30 days with the property set to be vacated by June 1st. City and county leaders are now reviewing the application to decide the fate of one of Orem’s last open spaces.  FOX 13
  • The Utah Lake Authority hosted the Paddle With Care festival at the Provo River Delta on May 17 to promote life jacket use and honor Priscilla Bienkowski & Sophia Hernandez who drowned in 2020. About 40 paddlers took part and Utah County Search and Rescue offered safety training & helped raise funds to expand the life jacket loaner program.  Daily Herald

  • This summer, University Place and The Boulevard will host Orchard Country Dancin’ at the orchard with live music and country dancing for all ages (June 20th, July 18th, August 1st, and August 15th).  University Place Orem

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brigham Young University announced plans to convert the former Provo High School site into its new School of Medicine, and officials said ongoing classes will continue at the campus until construction begins—local partners such as Intermountain Health will provide clinical training. Details on construction timing and the opening date were not released.  KUTV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rocky Mountain Power crews have been working since 2019 to bury powerlines in Emigration Canyon and change wooden poles to steel in a bid to lower wildfire risk in the Wasatch Mountains. A company spokesperson said teams and meteorologists are watching the situation—projects continue at sites across six states.  KJZZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • An Orem family celebrated when their premie daughter Sarah Kurz, born at 23 weeks, left the NICU at Timpanogos Regional Hospital after 140 days of care even though her twin sister Thandi did not survive. The bittersweet day followed many hard months + deep bonds with the hospital staff and marked a turning point for the family.  KUTV
  • State lawmakers in Utah passed House Bill 452 that stops mental health chatbots from using personal information to protect users. Some locals have turned to AI for help with tough feelings, but a Springville psychologist warned that while AI may offer support, it cannot replace real human care — experts hope future advances will improve safe use.  FOX 13
