CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Aaron Jayne, 43, appeared virtually from Utah County Jail on Wednesday to address concerns about his legal team as he faces nine felony charges—including aggravated murder for fatally striking Sgt. Bill Hooser on May 5—while Judge Thomas Low set another session before preliminary hearings scheduled for June 30 and July 1.  Daily Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College and university leaders met before the Board of Higher Education on Friday to discuss major changes—such as $65 million in cuts and the elimination of some programs—in response to a state bill; they will add new courses in fields like health care and cybersecurity to help students earn degrees faster. The Board approved the plans, which aim to meet growing workforce needs.  FOX 13
  • The Russian government added BYU to its list of undesirable organizations (as reported by The Moscow Times) and banned the university from operating in Russia (no official reason was given).  Mid Utah Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at the University of Utah found that thick layers of soft sediment under the Salt Lake Valley could make shaking from a future earthquake stronger—many older unreinforced buildings might be at risk, prompting updates to the community velocity model.  ABC4
  • Lake Powell and Lake Mead were about 32% full as of June 4, and experts from Utah State University and the University of New Mexico say water use is outpacing melting snowpack with runoff expected to be 45% of average between April and July—warning that seven states must soon reduce water consumption to manage the dwindling supply.  The Salt Lake Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Phil Lyman filed a lawsuit in federal court on June 6 seeking full access to Utah’s voter registration file—including names, addresses and dates of birth—even for protected groups, and his legal team argues that federal law requires full transparency. State officials have not commented on the pending case while Lyman and his attorneys claim that the move will ensure accurate voter rolls.  The Salt Lake Tribune
