Good morning, Orem. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 4th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • A Provo couple, Darren Justin Berriel (35) and Rachelle Southwick (32), were booked into Utah County Jail on Wednesday after a multi-week investigation revealed allegations of child abuse including physical harm and neglect reported by the children; both are held without bail pending a pretrial hearing while denying the accusations.  ABC4

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Early Thursday morning, Mapleton police and wildlife officials responded after a mountain lion and her cub were seen in a neighborhood as a resident chased the animal; recent chicken attacks had raised community concerns. Authorities are now tracking the cougar in wooded areas near Springville — residents are urged to report any sightings.  ABC4
  • University of Utah professor Bill Johnson and his graduate students drilled into round spots on the Great Salt Lake’s dry playa on June 17 and found a large freshwater aquifer that flows naturally to the surface + the team used a $315,599 grant to study the well, noting it is not a viable water supply for growing communities. The fresh water may help dampen dust from the exposed lakebed and protect public health.  The Salt Lake Tribune
  • On Thursday, Utah became the only state fully under drought, marking the first time every area was affected since December 2022. A recent drought monitor map (showing all regions in Moderate or Severe drought) and declining reservoir levels highlight ongoing water supply concerns.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A record 72.2 million Americans are traveling over the holiday weekend, and UDOT said I-15 in Salt Lake and Davis County saw minor delays while Orem drivers were advised to leave early. UDOT said westbound US-6 near Wellington will see up to 50 minutes of extra delay on July 6 — travelers should plan accordingly.  ABC4
