SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Jazz coach and executive Frank Layden, aged 93, passed away on July 9 as community leaders praised his role in turning the team into a success—his humor and dedication left a lasting mark on Utah sports. • The Jazz beat the Thunder 86-82 in their summer league game — Walter Clayton, Jr. scored 20 points in his best performance while Kyle Filipowski, who added 18 points and 15 rebounds, worked on reducing his turnovers and fouls as he adjusts to a new role. • Coach Kyle Whittingham decided against retirement after a 5-7 season last year and will lead his team in his 21st season this fall—he said last season's struggles and injuries made stepping away unbearable—and now hopes to secure a Big 12 title with a new offensive coordinator and promising quarterback Devon Dampier.  The Salt Lake Tribune
