Good morning, Orem.

Lauren Salimbene, a 19-year-old from Centerville, won Miss Volunteer America last month in Tennessee and earned a $50,000 scholarship while serving as a Special Olympics coach and national ambassador for the Salvation Army and St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital.

She will study finance and accounting at Westminster College and plans to keep volunteering in Utah — she says service has always been part of her heart — inviting others to join local service projects.

Teen apprentices at Spy Hop learned about the Great Salt Lake from local journalists and experts as part of a program funded by Salt Lake City Arts Council’s Wake the Great Salt Lake program.

They created mini magazines explaining how the lake affects local industries such as skiing — and their work was shown at a zine fest and is available at the downtown library.

A survey by the USU Community and Natural Resources Institute showed that Utahns widely supported environmental protections — many expressed concern over water scarcity, air pollution, and the drying of the Great Salt Lake.

The survey of 468 households from 26 counties revealed that 55% of respondents believed federal rules should be strengthened while most felt that Utah politicians were not doing enough to address these issues.

Nate Schmidt—the new Mammoth defenseman nicknamed 'Spicy Tuna'—signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract to add his NHL experience and defensive skill to the team; he said he will work hard to earn his role while enjoying more stability for his growing family and outdoor life.

Real Salt Lake won its second straight game on July 12 as William Agada scored in the 42nd minute to give the team a 1-0 win over the Houston Dynamo and extend its unbeaten streak to four games.

The team will play at Portland on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on Apple TV — it will host FC Cincinnati next Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
