EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ At least $800,000 in voucher funds went to 129 faith-based vendors through Utah Fits All, a school voucher program that gave families spending choices for education. Top vendor — The Good and the Beautiful — received over $542,000 while faith-based expenditures accounted for less than 2% of the total spending. The Salt Lake Tribune
- ➤ Construction crews at Wasatch Elementary School in Provo began repairing a retaining wall that crumbled when runoff water from the mountain weakened it. School officials are drilling borings (with Piezometers inserted to monitor water levels) throughout the year to plan long-term fixes. KUTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At a heated Monday meeting, the Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District board approved an 11% water tax increase for nearly 800,000 Utah Valley residents—this change will appear on upcoming bills and fund system maintenance and conservation efforts. One board member from Riverton Council dissented, arguing that cost-cutting should come first. KJZZ
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at the University of Utah studied a weight loss drug and found that it leads to significant weight loss with little loss in muscle mass but lowers muscle strength in animal tests, prompting calls for human studies. Risa Baker of Bountiful said she lost 80 pounds over two years and now works out more (the study focused on mice) (her results add to the growing discussion on these drugs). FOX 13
