  • On Saturday morning, veterans and a local business at Ready Gunner shooting range in Orem showed how to retire a damaged American flag after it was torn by a windstorm—urging proper care for the national symbol. Quartermaster Kelly Kirkpatrick of American Legion Post 72 and Cody Snyder of Ready Gunner advised people to drop off flags at military offices instead of throwing them away.  FOX 13
  • Jennifer Lambert of Highland closed her Highland Run Club after eight summers when the 2025 season ended on Aug. 1 with over $10,000 raised for Thanksgiving Heroes; she said a new version may start next year as she focuses on family priorities—her son is set for international soccer trials.  Daily Herald

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Saturday, a fire called the Maple Fire burned about 50 acres in Mapleton along the south end of Fire Break Road — it moved up the mountain away from homes as ground and air crews worked to stop its spread and issued a warning for homes south of the bench.  FOX 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Utah violinist John Shin was detained by ICE on Monday at 2:30 p.m. after his wife received a brief call stating he was being taken to a detention center—family friend Gabriel Gordon said his loved ones are raising funds and writing letters to help secure his return.  FOX 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Buckley Draw Fire in Provo remains at 21% containment after burning 446 acres, and upcoming storms with rain and lightning are expected to add challenges for firefighters. Fire crews will bunker down and clear a debris basin—steps to keep mudslides at bay—while teams monitor weather impacts.  Daily Herald

  • Former Pirates pitcher Vernon Law, a Provo resident, was inducted into the Pirates Hall of Fame on Thursday, Aug. 21, for his key role in the 1960 World Series and his long career with the team—he joins only 35 members in the Class of 2025.  Daily Herald
