CRIME NEWS

  • Firefighters battling the Buckley Draw Fire near Provo have faced a record 23 drone incursions—delaying aerial suppression and prompting law enforcement to refer five operators to the district attorney—as crews work to contain the 452-acre blaze with help from incoming storms.  KJZZ

FINANCE NEWS

  • Bankrate's report found that in 2024, Utah homeowners paid an average of $1,290 in home insurance—$1,180 less than the national average—despite a 20% rate increase, which made Utah the eighth least expensive state. Poor credit scores and extreme weather drove up costs in other areas.  KUTV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • John Shin, a Utah violinist detained by ICE last week, had his friends play violins in the Utah State Capitol rotunda to draw the attention of lawmakers to his case. His attorney said a 2020 impaired driver conviction made him a priority for immigration—his bond hearing is set for next Tuesday while a GoFundMe helps cover legal fees.  FOX 13
  • The EPA withdrew nearly all of a $62M federal grant for solar projects on August 7—halting plans to lower energy bills and bring power to remote areas in Utah. Local officials had planned to use the funds for projects in towns like Bluff and now face delays and higher costs for renewable energy installations.  The Salt Lake Tribune
