CULTURE NEWS

  • The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began groundwork for its new temple in Lehi on Monday with city approval and is installing underground water, sewer, and electricity to prepare a leveled site—design work continues and an official groundbreaking date will be announced later.  Daily Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials from the Utah Lake Authority said harmful algal blooms caused by high summer temperatures are lessening with the recent cooler weather—though thick blooms on the shore still pose a health risk to people and pets. The Utah Department of Environmental Quality has posted warning signs at beaches and urged residents to avoid submerging their heads in the water.  FOX 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Utah lawmakers will consider a new solar policy that limits incentives for farms on productive land and requires developers to benefit local communities—addressing farmers’ concerns about losing prime cropland. A committee approved the measure with a 9—5 vote and similar proposals are set to be fast-tracked next year.  Daily Herald

  • Experts warn travelers planning holiday getaways to secure personal information with strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and VPNs—75% of U.S. adults are reported to be concerned about privacy risks from hackers accessing data over public Wi-Fi.  KUTV
