CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Today, at the final day of the 8th Annual Silicon Slopes Summit in Salt Lake City, Elder David A. Bednar said that French might one day become the dominant language in the church while Spanish remains the most spoken language among its members—he explained that growing membership in former French-speaking African nations could make French more prominent. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Utah Valley University returned to class on September 17 and students grieved the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk while the school set up 24 Care Stations with mental health resources for several weeks—efforts designed to help students cope with their loss. KUTV
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Robert Redford, celebrated actor and environmentalist, died Tuesday at 89—he fought to protect Utah lands with conservation easements at Sundance Resort and around Mount Timpanogos—and left a legacy that guides current efforts to preserve our local environment. The Salt Lake Tribune
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Utah State Legislature will start its court-ordered redistricting process next week with public hearings on Capitol Hill—where residents can offer input on the proposed maps—and a ten-day comment period beginning Sept. 25. The legislature will vote on the maps in a special session on Oct. 6 before they are sent for judicial approval. FOX 13
- ➤ The Legislature appointed ten lawmakers to a committee to redraw the U.S. House district maps, with Candice Pierucci and Scott Sandall leading the group. They must submit a draft by September 25 for public review and complete the final maps by November 10—attorneys may appeal if the maps do not meet Proposition 4 standards. The Salt Lake Tribune
- ➤ Governor Cox said Utah’s five national parks will stay open even if a government shutdown happens—five million dollars in funding from caretaker foundations will keep the parks running though some visitor services may close. Mid Utah Radio
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Researchers from Huntsman Cancer Institute studied 7,000 Utahns and found that people with two or more tattoo sessions had a lower risk of melanoma while those with one session showed a higher risk — more research is needed to understand if sun safety or immune responses explain this trend. FOX 13
