- ➤ Orem City Truck-or-Treat will be held at University Place on Saturday, October 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A quiet hour for kids with sensory needs will run from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.—the event will offer rides, face painting, live entertainment and a free bag of goodies from the Orem City booth while individual vehicles will not hand out candy. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ An Orem community mourned as a ninth-grade student from Canyon View Junior High School died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a school field trip Wednesday—grief counselors were offered and classes resumed Thursday while investigators reviewed the incident. KUTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Utah lawmakers will select a new congressional map on Oct. 6—after which a judge will review the boundaries before the map becomes official. A ten-day public comment period begins Friday as the Legislative Redistricting Committee reviews six proposals to preserve communities of interest. The Salt Lake Tribune
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Local pharmacies are confused by the federal guidance that now requires a prescription for COVID vaccines for those under 65—doctors and pharmacists say the ACIP recommendation and pending CDC guidance have delayed vaccine orders and sparked customer frustration. FOX 13
- ➤ The Utah Department of Health and Human Services says measles cases in Utah have increased to 41, with 27 in southwest Utah, 7 in Utah County, 3 in southeast Utah, and 4 new cases in Box Elder and Cache counties. Health officials said people may have been exposed at a Chick-fil-A on Highway 165 in Providence on Sept. 11 between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.—and at the Budge Clinic in Logan on Sept. 15, mainly affecting unvaccinated individuals.
