EDUCATION NEWS

  • Commissioner Landward urged all campuses to strengthen free speech after the fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk on Sept. 10 at UVU during the Utah Board of Higher Education’s public meeting in Salt Lake City on Jan. 16—he added that campuses must review security and funding needs to ensure safer spaces for open dialogue. The board voted to form a task force to assess security measures across the system as part of the response to the tragic incident.  The Salt Lake Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Spencer Cox signed a proclamation that will call lawmakers to meet on Monday at 8 a.m.—three days before a court deadline—to choose new voting maps and review bills that change how the high court leader is chosen and update election laws. Lawmakers will review six map proposals and public comments on redistricting before voting on these measures.  The Salt Lake Tribune
  • Governor Cox has called a special session for Monday so lawmakers will vote on a new congressional map, a redistricting bill and a plan to help the Great Salt Lake's health. Lawmakers will also consider changes to state bills—this session follows a court order for a new map.  FOX 13
