CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Before Charlie Kirk’s Sept 10 appearance at UVU, Brian Harpole—head of his contracted security team—texted police chief Jeff Long about securing accessible rooftops and received a reply saying 'I got you covered'—but Harpole said no extra patrols were assigned, leaving questions after Kirk was fatally shot from a roof. - ➤ A UVU professor warned students of a phishing email scam that used his name and image to promise a fake research job and cost one student nearly $3000—he said others were also targeted and that the scam email has been blacklisted while he started a GoFundMe to help cover the loss. KUTV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ House Bill 48 passed during the 2025 Legislature will require the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands to inspect high-risk, fire-prone homes and charge fees based on square footage unless homeowners complete risk mitigation, with the law set to take effect in January 2026. KUTV
- ➤ The Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute released long-term planning projections showing Utah’s population increased from 3.6 million to an expected 5.6 million by 2065 due to net migration, declining natural change, an aging population and urban growth. The report also stated that the state is expected to add 1.2 million jobs in health care, scientific, finance and insurance sectors. FOX 13
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Health officials confirmed two measles cases in central Utah among unvaccinated individuals—exposed through contact with people who had measles. The Central Utah Health Department reported that the patients had limited interactions and advised anyone exposed to watch for symptoms for 21 days. Mid Utah Radio
- ➤ Utah hospitals including St. George Regional Medical Center served as exposure sites during a measles outbreak that saw nearly 20% of the state's cases occur in recent weeks. The state health officials noted that while most residents are vaccinated — providing strong protection — unvaccinated individuals remain at risk and should consult their healthcare providers. FOX 13
