Good morning, Orem.

A Provo couple, Darren Justin Berriel (35) and Rachelle Southwick (32), were booked into Utah County Jail on Wednesday after a multi-week investigation revealed allegations of child abuse including physical harm and neglect reported by the children; both are held without bail pending a pretrial hearing while denying the accusations.

Early Thursday morning, Mapleton police and wildlife officials responded after a mountain lion and her cub were seen in a neighborhood as a resident chased the animal; recent chicken attacks had raised community concerns.

Authorities are now tracking the cougar in wooded areas near Springville — residents are urged to report any sightings.

University of Utah professor Bill Johnson and his graduate students drilled into round spots on the Great Salt Lake’s dry playa on June 17 and found a large freshwater aquifer that flows naturally to the surface + the team used a $315,599 grant to study the well, noting it is not a viable water supply for growing communities. The fresh water may help dampen dust from the exposed lakebed and protect public health.

On Thursday, Utah became the only state fully under drought, marking the first time every area was affected since December 2022.

A recent drought monitor map (showing all regions in Moderate or Severe drought) and declining reservoir levels highlight ongoing water supply concerns.

A record 72.2 million Americans are traveling over the holiday weekend, and UDOT said I-15 in Salt Lake and Davis County saw minor delays while Orem drivers were advised to leave early.

UDOT said westbound US-6 near Wellington will see up to 50 minutes of extra delay on July 6 — travelers should plan accordingly.
